How Old is Your Car in People Years?

There's a simple formula for calculating this (a formula I invented). Take the mileage on the car's odometer and divide by the model year. The result is your car's age if it were a person.

Example: a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier with 131,824 miles on it. Do the math:

131824/1994 = 66.1.

That car would be a 66 year old person.

Enjoy.  (Oh, and like they say: your mileage may vary.)

This is a stupid formula. If you have a 2000 car with 150,000 miles, the age is 75. If the car was made in 1950, its age is 76.9. That is an insignificant difference. Not to mention the make is not taken into account. My current car is a 2002 Acura with almost 150k miles, with nary a problem. My last car was a 1995 Toyota Tercel with almost 224,000 miles (112 years old??) that was running like a champ, and taken out of commission only because of a crash. It had no mechanical problems. No way would a 94 Cavalier with 134k miles would stack against an '02 Acura with 150k miles.

From Yahoo content to Jalopnik to here, I was delighted with this 'simple'formula which I was too tired to think thru. Thks to David's comment, I am reminded of how much I miss my mid-80's yr cars, '83 Toyota Tercel SW w/ manual lever to all wheel dr, 86 Acura ??? 5-door Hatchback, 85 BMW 521 Sedan, ALL which had 200k miles before passing on to someone else due to cost of normal maintenance. My last and now current cars are 94 Ford Aerostar and now 95 Ford Tauras, which SIMPLY DO NOT AGE GRACEFULLY w miles. All cars were purchased/given as pre=owned for about 10 yrs w no more than 2 owners who did reg upkeep. The 2 fords break down easily after 100k even w/1 owner & precise maintenance. I'm hoping for another Accura next. DAVID, you know of what you speak. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

I miss my 1972 Plymouth Duster with its awesome 225 cid slant-six propulsion unit and its decadent three-on-the-tree manual transmission.

Front bench seat and with the manual transmission mounted upon the steering column my sweetie could slide on over and cuddle up against me and place that cold can of beer up to my lips followed by the placing of a well-rolled doobie as we motored down the Interstate looking so neat upon the seat as the 8-track tape player belched out Deep Purple as the 23-cent per gallon leaded gas spewed its combusted by-products out the exhaust unhindered by a convertor of catalytics.

Sniff.

Well, Maybe this needs a little more work. Some of the cars we use to bring you all your steaming hot pizzas are well over 100 years old, with little or no sign of their "true age". Remember to treat the drivers of these mature pieces of machinery well, cause it's not free to keep them that way.

I submit my 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier with 301,000 miles on it. That equates to an astounding 151 years old. Original engine and tranny and still running strong! The American made vehicles are not junk, so, I simply say, Japanese vehicle humpers can collectively take a big dose of shut-up.

My 1982 Toyota has 489k miles and I still drive that beater without oil changes to work everyday. American made vehicles are no where close to the quality of Imports; However, I must say they do have a good amount of cup holders. Wake up Chuck, The Big 3 needs a bailout for a reason.

It's clearly Photoshopped.

But American cars could be completely on par with the imports--particularly the German cars--if we could somehow discover the secret of less-"plasticy" plastic and just went the hell ahead and used stiffer bushings in our suspensions.

You can make my chunk of the bailout check out to "Cash." Thanks.

This is not a very good formula. I have a 1997 Ford Escort with about 29,000 miles which is actually 13 years old and according to this formula it figures out to a 14.5 year old car even though it has less miles than may cars 1-2 years old. A 2009 model with what is considered average yearly mileage of 12,000 miles would figure out to nearly 6 years old. I also have an '88 Ford Escort with 502,000 miles and it figures out to 252.5 years old, but if it was a car made in 1935 with the same mileage it would only be considered 259.4 years old less than 7 years difference in age, but physically 53 years older.

I live in the Virgin Islands. All tiny steep bendy roads. 100,000 miles here is an entirely different experience for a car than 100,000 miles in Florida, say. We would need an altitude odometer to help calculate the real age. I suspect my 97 Sidekick with 64000 miles, almost none on the flat, is quite a bit older than 32!

One of the most popular and fantastic car model manufactured by the Japanese car maker Honda is the Honda Civic. Though this car has been modified by several of its owners still you might come across a few of its original versions on the roads. In the intensely competitive car world the
civic chips for cars in with its reliability, durability, longevity and safety.

I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the structure
of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got
to say. But maybe you could a little more in the
way of content so people could connect with it better.

Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 images.
Maybe you could space it out better?
